Patients have high expectations of their health care providers. When a complication occurs or there is an adverse or unexpected outcome the patient is usually very distressed and does not understand what has occurred. Many patients do not have an in-depth understanding of their condition and what has occurred in their treatment.
Often the patient is simply seeking an explanation of what happened together with an understanding of what will happen now i.e. will there a permanent injury, will I require further treatment and what this treatment will involve, will I be in hospital longer than expected etc.
Taking the time at an early stage to ensure your patient has an understanding of what has occurred in their treatment in many instances is likely to be sufficient to avoid a health care complaint.
